Culabone

Grenoble

Culabone is a slip for Cularo, today Grenoble. The town first appears in 43 BC, in a letter in Cicero's correspondence written from Cularo on the border of the Allobroges. It was a village of the city of Vienne with a customs post for the Gallic duty, and under Diocletian and Maximian it received walls whose gate inscriptions name the walls of Cularo. Later the emperor Gratian gave it his own name, Gratianopolis, which became Grenoble. A late Roman list of garrisons places the tribune of a cohort there.
