Cuma

Listen to the story

Cumas is Cumae, the oldest Greek city in Italy, founded in the eighth century BC by settlers from Chalcis on Euboea, whose descendants went on to found Neapolis. On its acropolis stood a temple of Apollo, and below it the cave of the Sibyl whom Aeneas consults in Virgil's epic; nearby lay Lake Avernus, held to be the entrance to the underworld. In 474 BC the Greeks defeated an Etruscan fleet off Cumae.
