Cupra Maritima

Cupra Marittima [Pleiades] · Marano bei Grottamare [2]

Listen to the story

Cupra Maritima, Cupra by the sea, grew up around a sanctuary of the goddess Cupra on the Adriatic coast near Grottammare. The Greek geographer Strabo says Etruscans founded it and that they called Hera by the name Cupra; the Roman poet Silius Italicus sings of the smoking altars of Cupra on the shore, and the emperor Hadrian restored the temple. Yet the map gives the place no temple picture.
