Cytmon

Gythion · Gytheio · Γύθειο

Cytmon is Gythium, today Gytheio in Greece, the harbour and naval base of Sparta, with a safe anchorage said to have been dug out by hand, a shipyard and a wall. Augustus freed it from Spartan rule, and it became a town of the Free Laconians. From here, says the Roman writer Pliny, ran the surest course to Crete. The map's strange spelling comes from a misread Gythion, the small letters t, h and i taken for t and m; the list of places compiled in Ravenna, copying the same source, turns it into Pythion.
