Dertum

Monopoli

Listen to the story

Dertum is a copyist's garble of Dirium, a small town on the coast of Apulia at today's Monopoli. The Roman writer Pliny lists its people as the Dirini, and the medieval geographer Guido of Pisa notes that Dirium is now called Monopolis. The list of places compiled in Ravenna spells it Diriam and Dixium. From here the coast road ran on to Egnatia, the next town of note.
