Dodone
Here the map marks a station with its distances but forgot to write the name, perhaps because the long label for Nicopolis took up the space. Older research identified the nameless place as Dodona in Epirus, and the map's forty-five miles, about sixty-seven kilometres, on to Nicopolis suit the winding road well. Dodona, below Mount Tomaros, held the oldest recorded oracle of Greece, the oracle of Zeus already known to Homer; the Romans sacked it in 167 BC, yet the cult lasted into the fourth century AD, and the great theatre was turned into an arena.
