Dortico

Vrâv

Dortico is Dorticum, a Roman fort at Vrav in Bulgaria, where the Timok flows into the Danube. The Greek geographer Ptolemy already counts it among the few places of Upper Moesia worth naming, and after 271, when Rome gave up Dacia north of the river, it belonged to the new province of Dacia Ripensis. A troop of Dalmatian horsemen held it in the fourth century, and Justinian still fortified it strongly. From here the map follows the winding Danube, where a Roman register of routes takes a shorter way.
