Dimo

Belene

Dimo is Belene on the Danube, the chief place of the Dimenses, a Getic people. It was a customs post of the Illyrian toll, as an inscription naming the station of Dimum shows, and later a fort where a cavalry unit was stationed in the fourth century. The Dimenses served the Roman army in numbers: in 241 sixteen men from their district were in the Guard at Rome, and the monument they set up there shows the gods of their homeland, among them Mars, Mercury, Hercules and the god called Heros.
