Diana

(E Hippo Regius) (Barrington)

A little house drawn on the coastal road of Africa Proconsularis, with no name beside it, marks the station of Diana, called Ad Dianam, 'at Diana's', in a Roman register of routes. The picture was taken for a temple of the goddess of the wilds and of crossroads, fitting for a place travellers passed through. The name was supplied by scholars. Even a list of places compiled in Ravenna gives it in one passage but skips it in another, so the name seems to have been missing long ago. The station lay about thirty-two Roman miles, some forty-seven kilometres, from Hippo Regius. Its exact site is unknown.
