Dissio Aqua Amara

bei Mellafah

Dissio Aqua Amara carries a telling second half: aqua amara means bitter water, and the place had mineral springs. It was a junction on the road from Leptis Magna to the Altars of the Philaeni: two roads come in, from Naladus at twenty-five Roman miles and from Ad Cisternas at thirty-five, and two leave, to Chosol and to Musula, each thirty miles away. Older research split the words into two stops, Dissio and Aqua Amara, but they are now read as one name. The site lies near Mellafah in Libya.
