Docymeo

İscehisar

Docymeo is Dokimeion, at İscehisar in western Turkey, a town that lived from its quarry. The Greek geographer Strabo tells how its coloured marble, which the Romans named after the larger town of Synnada, first came out in small blocks, until Roman love of luxury had huge single-piece columns cut. The town was founded by Macedonians, perhaps by Dokimos, a general of Antigonus, late in the 4th century BC. Its stone still counted in late antiquity: Diocletian's price edict of 301 set a ceiling on it, and in 414 Theodosius the Second left the quarry out of a general cancellation of debts.
