River
Fluvius Sagar
Sakarya Nehri
Listen to the story
The Sakarya, which winds across north-western Turkey to the Black Sea, is the river the Tabula labels Fluvius Sagar. Ancient writers knew it for its many bends and for its lower course, which marked the border of Bithynia, and the map seems to show both. Yet here it is drawn in the wrong place: a cartographer apparently confused it with the Artanes, which reaches the sea near a town of the same name. As a stopgap, a second, very short stretch of the river was added farther along, and the name turns up again at two river-crossing stations.
