River
Fluvius Rigonum
Riglio [4] · Rigozzo [3]
Listen to the story
A river winding in two sharp bends from the Apennines down to the Po near Cremona carries the label Fluvius Rigonum, a stream known from no other ancient source. Where it crosses the Via Aemilia between the road stations of Florentia and Fidentia, its bed cuts straight through the name of Florentia, which led some scholars to think of the Arda at Fiorenzuola. It is most probably the Riglio in northern Italy, a small stream that joins the Chiavenna before reaching the Po. Together, the two valleys linked the Roman town of Veleia with the plain. Rivers and towns are badly tangled on this part of the map, so the identification remains uncertain.
