River
Fluvius Savo
Sava · Save
Listen to the story
On the Tabula the Fluvius Savo never reaches the Danube: it runs into the Drava, and the joined stream seems to carry on as the Drinus into the Adriatic. The Greek geographer Strabo also let it flow into the Drava, but the Adriatic outlet is probably a copyist's slip, caused by faded colour in the model. The river is the Sava, crossing Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. The map has it rise from a mountain symbol for the Julian Alps, trimmed to a narrow strip so that mountain and river form a border, just as the Sava divided Noricum from Italy and then Pannonia from Illyria. Its name has crumbled away almost entirely.
