Vio

Utum

Vio is Utum, a Roman fort by the river Utus, today the Vit, in Bulgaria, fourteen Roman miles after Esco and nine before Anasamo. The Roman register of routes spells it Uto, and the list of places compiled in Ravenna Bion. In late Roman times, according to a late Roman list of garrisons, a cavalry unit named after Constantine was stationed here. Gravestones of veterans have been found at the site, near Gaureni on the right bank of the Vit, and further inscriptions across the river and at its mouth.
