Road station
Villa Gai
near Schwechat?
Listen to the story
Villa Gai, the country estate of Gaius, was a station on the Danube road from Vindobona, the Roman Vienna, towards Carnuntum. It is probably the same post that a Roman register of routes calls Ala Nova, the new cavalry post, somewhere between Schwechat and Fischamend; at Schwechat roof tiles stamped by Roman legions have been found. On the map the heavily inked g may hide a corrected letter. The map sets the station ten Roman miles from Vindobona.
