Vindonissa
Windisch SWI
Vindonissa is Windisch in Switzerland, on the tongue of land where the Aare and the Reuss meet. After the defeat in the Teutoburg Forest, Rome decided to station a legion in the land of the Helvetii, and from around 16 AD Vindonissa was a legionary fortress, held in turn by the Thirteenth Legion, the Twenty-first, called Rapax, and from 69 the Eleventh, which stayed until 101. The Twenty-first built most of the camp and an amphitheatre outside it, the only one of its kind in eastern Switzerland. Later Windisch had a bishop, until the see moved to Constance around 560.
