VII Maria

Contarina

Listen to the story

Septem Maria, the Seven Seas, was the Roman name for the chain of lagoons at the mouths of the Po and the Adige, and a Roman register of routes says that from Ravenna one could sail through the Seven Seas all the way to Altinum. The station lay near Contarina in the Po delta. The land here has grown so much since then that the ancient shoreline is hard to trace.
