Vicus Cuppe

Golubac

Vicus Cuppe, the village of Cuppae, is Golubac on the Danube in Serbia, at the entrance to the great gorge of the Iron Gates. Its fort was strongly held in late Roman times, by Dalmatian horsemen, a local auxiliary unit and the commander of a legionary detachment, and stamped legionary tiles have been found in the ruins. From Cuppae a chain of smaller forts ran on along the river, and the Byzantine historian Procopius names it among the forts that Justinian restored.
