Road station

Datamissa

Pasinler

Datamissa was an important station on the great army road from Satala to Artaxata, at Pasinler, the former Hasankale, close to where the two main headwaters of the Araxes meet. Its name has been explained from a Persian personal name, Datama, a short form of Datamithra. The upper Araxes here is still called the Pasin, and the Greek army of the Ten Thousand, as Xenophon tells, mistook it for the Phasis of Colchis and turned into its valley, hoping it would lead them quickly to the Black Sea. Some older copies of the map misread the name as Batamissa.
