Ad Confluentes

Köprüköy

Köprüköy in eastern Turkey, whose Turkish name means bridge village, marks the site of Ad Confluentes, ten Roman miles beyond Datamissa on the army road from Satala to Artaxata. The Latin name means at the confluence, and here two headwaters of the Araxes meet, the longer of them being the river Xenophon called the Phasis. Older research judged this the most secure placing of any station on the whole road. On the thirty miles on to Barantea, the map has the road cross a river it labels Tigris.
