Ad Decem Pagos

Tarquimpol

Ad Decem Pagos, at the ten districts, lay on the road from Metz to Strasbourg, at Tarquimpol on the Lindre pond near Dieuze, a site rich in Roman finds. In 356 Julian planned to strike the Alamanni by way of Decem Pagi, as the Roman historian Ammianus records, and the early medieval historian Paul the Deacon, writing about the bishops of Metz, calls it a town thirty miles from Metz. The modern name Tarquimpol, as if from Tarquin, is a learned fancy of later centuries.
