Ad duodecimum

(etwa bei Heesch) (Miller)

On the last stretch of the road into Nijmegen, the map marks Ad Duodecimum and gives eighteen Roman miles to the town, drawn as two stretches. The name means At the Twelfth, that is, at the twelfth milestone, and the two figures seem to clash, until one notices that twelve Gallic leagues come to almost exactly eighteen Roman miles. The site is unknown, perhaps near Heesch or Dodewaard in the Netherlands. Another station on the map bears the same name.
