Ad duodecimum

Delme

The map sets Ad duodecimum between two stretches of twelve, the first coming from a point whose name is lost, on the road from Metz to Strasbourg. The name means at the twelfth, that is, at the twelfth milestone, and it fits the first station out of Metz. Where it stood is uncertain: Delme is the usual answer, with Baudrecourt and the forest east of Remilly as other proposals. Older research thought that names like this one arose only with the Roman roads themselves.
