Ad Ensem
Scheggia? [2 · 3]
Listen to the story
Ad Ensem would mean at the sword, but the silver cups of Vicarello and the pilgrim's route from Bordeaux call the place Hesis or Haesis, so the sword is probably a copyist's misreading. The station lay near Scheggia on the Via Flaminia, where a road to Perugia branched off. The map's seven Roman miles to Cales are about half of what the other road lists give, perhaps a five written in place of a ten.
