Listen to the story
A little river, the Fine, and an old church called Santa Maria ad Finem still carry the name of Ad Fines, the station at Rosignano on the Tuscan coast. The name means at the border: in the days of the Roman Republic the Fine is said to have marked the northern limit of Italy, though it may rather have been the boundary between the lands of Pisa and Volterra. On the map the next distance figure is lifted above the name to keep it clear of the river.
