Autisparate

Erzurum

Autisparate is identified with Erzurum in eastern Turkey, where the emperor Theodosius the Second later founded the city of Theodosiopolis. Besieged by the Persian king Bahram the Fifth around 420, it was a bishop's seat by 451, fell to the Sasanian king Kavadh in 502, and was won back by Anastasius, who strengthened its walls and briefly renamed it after himself. The modern name goes back to the Seljuk Arzan ar-Rum, land of the Romans. On the map the name of a people, the Colchi, is written beneath the station.
