City
Lamasco
Lapseki
Listen to the story
Lamasco turns up twice on the Tabula, once on the shore of the Dardanelles and once, under the same garbled name, wrongly inland. It is the Greek port of Lampsacus, today Lapseki in Turkey, with its p lost along the way. Its unusual pair of towers with light roofs is turned towards Constantinople, which suggests the entry was added after 330, once that city had become the capital. The town took its name from Lampsake, daughter of a local king, and was once called Pityoussa for its pines. It was famed for wine and goldsmiths, and in the fourth century it had a dye works making purple wool for the emperor.
