Listen to the story
Lacedemone is Sparta, named here with Lakedaimon, the official name the Spartans themselves used, in a late Latin spelling with a plain e. The name did not fit, so it was split in two and written on either side of the town's towers. The map sets the famous city on the coast, although it lay inland on the right bank of the Eurotas. Laconia has been folded upwards to save space, and the Eurotas seems to have been confused with another river, the Pamisus. The modern Greek town of Sparta was founded only in 1834.
