Listen to the story
Iuliopolis began as a village called Gordiu Kome, home of the local ruler Kleon, who went over to Augustus in 31 BC. In his honour the village was enlarged into a town and renamed the city of Julius, after the emperor's family. Its ruins lie on a ridge near Sarılar, close to Çayırhan in Turkey, above a reservoir that has swallowed the old bridge. The map gives it a pair of towers, fitting a station on the busy road to Constantinople. When the river threatened the town wall, the emperor Justinian had it held back with a retaining wall.
