Lamasco

Listen to the story
Lamasco turns up here for the second time on the map, and at this spot it is almost certainly a copyist's slip. The road between Cyzicus and Prusias should pass through Apamea, a port on the Sea of Marmara just outside Mudanya in Turkey. Founded by Greeks from Colophon as Myrleia, it was refounded by the Bithynian king Nicomedes the Second in honour of his mother Apame, and later became a Roman colony. The map pushes this whole coastal route inland, and it even forgets to draw the road on to Prusias. Perhaps the town's decline after a Gothic raid in the 250s AD let its real name fade.
