Listen to the story
Ivavo is Roman Iuvavum, the city that became Salzburg in Austria, on the left bank of the Salzach. The emperor Claudius raised it to the rank of a municipium, a self-governing town, and the geographer Ptolemy knew it by a name honouring him. The map shows it as a knot in the road network with a small house-shaped drawing, the only one in the whole Raetia and Noricum region, where every other town gets a pair of towers. Beneath it a later hand added 'Salzpurg' in light ink, perhaps the eighteenth-century scholar who published the map.
