Iuliomago
Angers
Listen to the story
Iuliomagus sits on the Tabula where three roads meet, from Tours, from Rennes and from the harbour of Nantes, although the copyist left the Nantes road without any distance figure. The town was the capital of the Andes, a Gallic people Caesar already knew. Its Latin name honours the Julian family and was probably given under Augustus rather than Caesar. Later the tribal name replaced it, and the town survives as Angers in France. Traces of an amphitheatre remain, and inscriptions name an imperial steward called Agathocles and a freedman of the emperor.
