Ionnaria

Stubo-Vrelo

Listen to the story

Ionnaria, a place known only from this map, lay in the Roman province of Dalmatia on the road from Salona to Servitium and is placed at Stubo-Vrelo in Bosnia, where a grave relief showing Eros, coins, pottery and Roman graves have come to light. Its drawing is unusual: a red building that seems to grow straight out of the road line, improvised from one of its zigzag bends, perhaps to squeeze in a name that had been forgotten, with the distance figure fourteen crammed in right after it. The building shows its front and both sides, with a small tower-like annexe, probably an apse, a touch that looks like the copyist's own work.
