Igilgili Colonia
Jijel (Barrington) · Djidjelli (Miller)
Listen to the story
Igilgili Colonia began as a Phoenician or Punic harbour on the North African coast, and its name may be Punic for 'island of the skull', though that reading is uncertain. Today it is Jijel in Algeria. The Roman writer Pliny counts it among the colonies of Augustus, towns settled with Roman citizens. The map gives it a pair of towers, with the name carefully set between the drawing, the shoreline and three roads converging on the town. It was probably the main market for the surrounding peoples, a boundary stone marking its land against a neighbouring tribe was found there, and bishops are recorded in 411 and 484.
