Ptolemaidonar

el-Lahun

Listen to the story

Ptolemaidonar is most likely a garbled Ptolemais Hormou, Ptolemais of the anchorage, today's el-Lahun. The port lay on Joseph's canal where a branch led into the Fayum, linking that district with the Nile and so with Alexandria, and the grain of the Fayum was shipped through here. One of its officials is well known: Petaus, made village scribe of Ptolemais Hormou and other villages in AD 183 or 184, although he could not write. The odd ending of the name has long been debated. For the next stretch the map gives no figure at all.
