Veios
Veio
Listen to the story
Veios is Veii, near Isola Farnese just north of Rome, the great Etruscan rival of the young city. After a siege said to have lasted ten years, Camillus took it in 396 BC, and when the Gauls later sacked Rome, the Romans seriously debated moving to Veii altogether. Instead it dwindled to a small town, and the poet Propertius mourned that a shepherd's horn now sounded inside its walls, where crops were reaped over the bones of its people.
