Road station
Varum
Varo
Varum marks the crossing of the Var, the river that divided Gaul from Italy; the late Roman writer Vibius Sequester notes that the Var now formed the boundary once marked by the Rubicon. The map draws the river with an unusually heavy line, fitting its role as a frontier, and sets the station near its mouth. The distance figure onward is squeezed sideways between the river and the road and is very faint. Just beyond, milestones on the road over La Turbie count six hundred and eight miles and fewer from Rome, by way of Piacenza.
