Variae

Vicovaro

Listen to the story

Variae is Varia, now Vicovaro, on a terrace above the river Anio where the valley of the Licenza opens, and it was the town nearest to the Sabine farm of the poet Horace. In a letter to his bailiff, Horace recalls that the farm once sent five good heads of households to Varia. Remains of walls of great squared blocks survive, and the Aqua Claudia aqueduct crossed the river here on its way to Rome.
