Vemania

Burkwang (AK) · Isny-Bettmauer

Vemania was a Roman fort near Isny in the Allgäu in Germany, at Bettmauer or Burkwang. A late Roman list of garrisons names a cavalry regiment of the Sequani here, and makes Vemania the starting point of a stretch of frontier held by part of the Third Italian Legion. A milestone of 201 found at Isny counts eleven Roman miles from Cambodunum, today Kempten. Older research placed Vemania at Wangen or Memmingen. On the map it lies fifteen miles from Ad Renum and twenty-three from Viaca, the figure squeezed above the name for lack of space.
