Vesubio

Le Mas-d’Agenais

Vesubio, called Ussubium in the Roman register of routes, lay on the road from Bordeaux to Agen. A dedication to Tutela Augusta naming Ussubium places it in the land of the Nitiobriges, at Le Mas-d'Agenais, where several ancient remains have been found. Older suggestions ranged from Sainte-Bazeille and La Réole to Meilhan. The distances given in both itineraries seem too long unless the road made a considerable detour, and one older historian even proposed that Ussubium and the next station, Fines, had changed places.
