Vetusallo

Adony

Listen to the story

Vetusallo is Vetus Salina, the old salt works, a Roman fort on the Danube frontier at Adony in Hungary. Begun in timber and earth, it was rebuilt in stone under the emperor Antoninus Pius; later the Danube washed most of it away, and only its south-western corner survives. Cohorts of Batavians and of Alpine troops served here, and in late Roman times Dalmatian horsemen. The map shortens the road: it gives only fourteen Roman miles from Aquincum, leaving out two stations in between.
