Via Aurelia

Via Aurelia is written on the map just outside Rome, on the road coming in from Lorium. The censor Aurelius Cotta probably laid it out in 241 BC, at first only as far as Cosa on the Etruscan coast. In 109 BC Aemilius Scaurus carried a road on from Pisa along the Ligurian coast to Genoa and Vado, and in imperial times the whole route from Rome to Arles in Gaul came to be called the Aurelia. Near the city it split into an old and a new Aurelia; the old one entered Rome by the Aurelian Gate, close to today's Porta San Pancrazio.
