Antino

Sheik Ibada

Antino is the short form of Antinoupolis, the city that Hadrian founded in AD 130 on the east bank of the Nile, at the spot where his beloved Antinous had died; today Sheikh Ibada, opposite Hermopolis. It was the fourth Greek city in Egypt, and its hand-picked settlers enjoyed a special status as the new Greeks of Antinoopolis. The entry shows that the map's Egypt was updated in the 2nd century or later, yet Hadrian's new road from here to the Red Sea ports is missing. Later a bishop's seat and capital of the Thebaid, it appears here as a bare name at a road fork.
