Ermupoli

Damanhur

Ermupoli is Hermopolis Parva, the lesser city of Hermes, at Damanhur, in the farmland behind Alexandria where many Alexandrians owned large estates and which helped to feed the city. In the early imperial period it became the capital of a new district between Lake Mareotis and the Nile, and in late antiquity it was a bishop's seat. On the map it sits beside the large empty space probably kept for a picture of Alexandria, and that plan seems to have pushed it too far north: it really belongs on the road from Memphis, between Melcati and Naucrati.
