Tapostri
Abu Sir (Barrington)
Tapostri is Taposiris Magna, at Abu Sir, founded by Ptolemy the Second and named after a tomb of Osiris that was walled and honoured as a shrine. The town was a centre of cult, with temples of Isis and Osiris, a Serapeum and an animal cemetery for ibises, falcons and fish, and it had a lighthouse too, known from an ancient graffito of a battlemented tower labelled Pharos. In late antiquity a small fort rose inside the temple court. Just beyond, the road ends at the Nile, and in the space apparently left for Alexandria only its lighthouse was drawn.
