Tapsum
Ras-Dimas
Tapsum is Thapsus, a fortified town on a headland beside a salt lake that still exists, at Ras Dimas in Tunisia. Probably Punic in origin, it was taken by Agathocles of Syracuse in 310 BC, went over to the Romans in the Third Punic War in 149 BC and was declared free three years later. Here in 46 BC Caesar defeated the Pompeians and King Juba, and in the imperial age the town flourished. A large Punic cemetery has been found nearby. On the map a crease has left the first letter faint, though not in doubt.
