Ruspina

Henchir-Tenir (Barrington) · Monastir (Miller)

Ruspina was Caesar's base in his African war: landing from Sicily and driven off at Hadrumetum, he dug in here at the end of 47 BC and ran his campaign from the town into the following month. It was the first town in Africa to side with him, though the war left it badly damaged. A Phoenician or Punic foundation, its name has been explained as corner cape; it lay on the ruin mound of Henchir Tenir near Monastir in Tunisia, and the Roman writer Pliny mentions how its figs were preserved. The twenty-five miles the map gives from Hadrito are too many.
