Ad Horrea

Hergla · هرقلة

At Hergla on the Tunisian coast, in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis, lay Ad Horrea, a station on the road from Carthage to Hadrumetum, close to the latter. The name means 'at the granaries'. The map gives it a small drawing of a rectangular house, marking a real village with buildings rather than a bare stop, though the copyist of around 1200 seems to have redrawn it in his own manner. Oddly, the word 'Ad' sits to the left of the picture, out in open water. A Roman register of routes calls the village Horrea Caelia, and it had a bishop by the middle of the third century.
