Ad Intercisa

Galleria del Furlo

Listen to the story

Ad Intercisa, at the cut, marks one of the great feats of Roman road building: in 77 AD Vespasian had a tunnel thirty-seven metres long cut through the rock of the Furlo gorge, and his name still stands in huge letters above its northern entrance. People called the spot Petra Pertusa, the pierced rock, and in the Gothic wars its garrison guarded the Via Flaminia between Rome and Ravenna.
